9 de septiembre. La primera advocación conocida de la Virgen bajo el nombre de Santa María la Antigua proviene de la provincia de León, España, aproximadamente hacía el año 1012. Una imagen de esta advocación permanece hoy en día en la Catedral de Sevilla. La primera diócesis creada en el territorio continental de América fue la Diócesis de Santa María de la Antigua (Panamá) en 1513. El Papa León X creó esta diócesis elevando su Capilla al rango de Catedral y asignándole perpetuamente como titular a la Santísima Madre de Dios bajo esta misma advocación. The first known invocation of the Virgin under the name of Saint Mary the Ancient comes from the province of León, Spain, approximately around the year 1012. An image of this invocation remains today in the Cathedral of Seville. The first diocese created in the continental territory of America was the Diocese of Santa María de la Antigua (Panama) in 1513. Pope Leo under this same title. Saint Mary the Ancient was proclaimed patron saint of the Republic of Panama on September 9 of the Jubilee Year 2000.
