Director of Marriage and Family Life

General Position Summary:  This position exists to provide diocesan programs which enhance the Catholic vision of family life, especially in preparation for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.  While offering programs for marriage enrichment as well as divorced, separated, and widowed persons, this position also serves as a resource to parishes in their marriage and family life ministry.   

Principal Accountabilities: 

  • Direct the diocesan program of Marriage preparation by teaching Pre-Cana and Today-Tomorrow-Forever classes using material and curriculum approved by the Department Director of Catechesis. 
  • Train sponsor couples for executing parish-level Marriage preparation (Fully Engaged) 
  • Meet with parish Marriage Coordinators on a quarterly basis to inform, train, and enrich their ministry.
  • Direct the execution of Marriage enrichment conferences as well as events for divorced, separated, and widowed persons.
  • Direct the execution of End-of-Life and Bioethics conferences. 
  • Collaborate in developing and presenting courses for the St. Junipero Serra Institute.
  • Assist parishes in forming their marriage and family life ministry.
  • Monitor any apostolates providing for marriage and family life ministry.      
  • Responsible for all other projects, tasks, etc., as assigned. 

Typical Decisions and/or Recommendations Made in This Position: 

  • In collaboration with the Department Director of Catechesis, this position makes managerial decisions regarding budget.

Supervision Given and/or Received: 

  • Received:  Direct supervision given to this position from Department Director of Catechesis. 

Internal Contacts: 

  • Priests, Deacons, Employees, Volunteers, and/or Parishioners. 

External Contacts: 

  • Diocesan Staff and/or Vendors            

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements: 

  • This position works in a typical office environment but is subject to stress due to the evolving and quickly expanding business needs, tight deadlines, and heavy workloads. 

Travel Requirements: 

  • Some travel required to Diocesan Parishes as well as vendors for supplies. 

Education and Experience Preferred: 

  • Master’s degree in Theology, required. 
  • National Catholic Bioethics Center certification, preferred.
  • 4-7 years’ experience in Marriage and Family, preferred.       

Knowledge and Skills Preferred: 

  • Active member in good standing of a Roman Catholic parish, required.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church, Catholic sacraments, and Catholic rites, required.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church including an in-depth familiarity with its structures, functions, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of Canon Law regarding Marriage required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and pastoral ability required.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized, self-motivated, and work well independently as well as on a team.
  • Must possess effective time-management techniques as well as the ability to think proactively and critically.
  • Must be able to effectively manage group dynamics as well as interpersonal relationships to yield positive results.
  • Skill in public speaking required.
  • Skill in working with high level clergy and public officials required.
  • Skill in writing and editing various documents required.
  • Ability to carry out multiple tasks, complete tasks per established guidelines and deadlines required.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times required.
  • Ability to proficiently communicate in English and Spanish (conversing, reading, and writing), required.
